Identifying plants in the winter presents a unique set of challenges. Practicing this skill will not only strengthen your plant ID skills, but will also provide you with a renewed sense of abundance for the food and medicine available to us throughout the cold season. We will discuss some winter medicinals and edibles, but also provide a space for connecting with plants outside of their windows of utilization, cultivating ethnobotanical relationships beyond the consumer-driven mindset.
A focus will be on twig, bud, bark & evergreen characteristics, as well as clues for IDing desiccated specimens in preparation for the upcoming season. Get inspired to get outside and explore even on the coldest of winter days!
