Discover Fort McAllister
Located just south of Savannah along the Ogeechee River, Fort McAllister is home to one of the best-preserved Confederate earthwork fortifications in the country. The fort withstood seven Union naval attacks before falling to Union forces on December 13, 1864, in the final battle of Sherman's March to the Sea.
Today, visitors can explore the historic earthworks, cannons, barracks, and other fortifications, along with a museum featuring Civil War artifacts and exhibits.
Beyond its remarkable history, Fort McAllister State Historic Park is one of Coastal Georgia's most scenic destinations. Majestic live oaks draped in Spanish moss, peaceful salt marshes, waterfront campsites, cabins, nature trails, fishing, and boating make it a wonderful place to spend the day or an entire weekend.
