Grab your friends and snowshoes/skis for Winter Moose Day on February 8 & 9, 2025! What a fun way to enjoy our national forests while contributing to science! Winter Moose Day allows anyone to adopt a route, snowshoe, or ski that route on Moose Days (February 8-9, 2024) and record how many moose or signs of moose you see. We have lots of route options of various difficult levels in the Vedauwoo/Happy Jack, Snowy Range, or Arlington areas. Your efforts contribute to our understanding of local moose populations.
Registration closes on February 2. Sign up ASAP to get your first choice route!
First-time participants are required to join us for a short in-person training on Saturday, February 1st from 10:00 – 11:30 am in the Business Building Auditorium (Business building is located at the corner of Ivinson and 15th). If you are unable to attend the in-person training, a virtual training will be available. This training consists of a one-hour classroom session and a one-hour outside training component. The training is to ensure surveyors can identify moose and signs of moose on routes. These can include tracks/hoofprints in snow, bed areas, scat droppings and browse on aspen and willows.
To survey while moose are most active, participants are asked to be on their route the morning of Feb. 8 or the morning of Feb. 9. New this year- routes can be adopted by multiple groups! So you might encounter other surveyors on your route, and the data gathered will be more rigorous.
The data gathered from Winter Moose Day are shared with biologists at UW. These biologists use the data collected by community scientists to further their understanding of the population densities of local moose, their reproductive rates, their winter ranges and how these variables change over time.
If you like to enjoy our national forests while participating in the management and conservation of local moose populations, then strap on your snowshoes or skis for Winter Moose Day on February 8 or 9!
