FEBRUARY 4, 6:30 P.M. - THE BALLAD OF WALLIS ISLAND
The Ballad of Wallis Island is a 2025 British comedy-drama film directed by James Griffiths, produced by Rupert Majendie, and written by Tim Key and Tom Basden. It is based on their 2007 short film The One and Only Herb McGwyer Plays Wallis Island. Basden and Carey Mulligan star as a folk duo who reunite to perform for a wealthy fan (Tim Key) on a remote Welsh island.
It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2025. Critic Bob Mondello reviewed the film for NPR, writing that it is "at once an odd-couple bromance, a quite respectable musical outing, and a nostalgic look at the memories we all lock up in the harmonies in our heads – the ones we carry with us through life."
MARCH 4, 5:30 P.M. - NE ZHA II
Ne Zha II delivers immaculate imagery, dynamic fight sequences, and an expansive, immersive fantasy world that pushes animation boundaries. The film’s use of new animation techniques results in scenes where characters, magical creatures, and elemental battles feel tangible and interactive. The character designs also incorporate Chinese aesthetics, such as traditional dragon patterns, jewel-toned color palettes, and culturally inspired clothing, lending a distinct visual identity not commonly seen in Western animation.
Upon its US release in 2025, critic Bob Mondello wrote, "Head-spinningly gorgeous in every frame, this mix of a 16th century novel, Chinese mythology and breathtaking digital imagery is a worldwide box-office juggernaut."
APRIL 1, 6:30 P.M. - THE AMERICAN SOUTHWEST
The American Southwest is a wild and unforgettable journey down the mighty Colorado River, narrated by Indigenous environmentalist Quannah Chasinghorse. The film beautifully showcases the region's abundant wildlife, confronts the ecological impacts of dams and river depletion, and boldly advocates for increased water and wildlife conservation. It travels through legendary landscapes from the viewpoint of some of the Southwest's most charming characters... such as wetland-building beavers, bugling bull elk, and desert-adapted rattlesnakes.
Critic Nathan Flynn states the film’s "combination of breathtaking visuals, heartfelt narration, and timely subject matter make it a rewarding journey down one of the most important—and imperiled—rivers in the world."
