About this Event
Event Description: Join Northern Virginia Bird Alliance guides Robin and Luke for a winter birding outing at Lake Audubon! Birders of all experience levels are welcome. The planned walking route includes a mix of woodland trail and paved surfaces, with both flat and hilly sections. Please wear sturdy shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. For information on birds observed at this location, visit the eBird hotspot: https://ebird.org/hotspot/L1539888.
Directions, parking & meeting your guides: Please park along Glade Drive in front of Walker Nature Center rather than in the WNC parking lot, as another event will be taking place at the center. Plan to meet your guides in the Walker Nature Center parking lot.
Your Guides: Robin is a Fairfax Master Naturalist and was recognized by the Virginia Master Naturalist state board as the 2020 Volunteer of the Year for her outstanding contributions to natural resource education, conservation, citizen science, and stewardship. She is an experienced bird guide with a wealth of knowledge to share. Luke High is an organizer for NVBA’s NextGen group and has led numerous birding events throughout the Northern Virginia area. Both guides are excited to introduce new and experienced birders alike to the excellent diversity of species found at this site.
About the site: Lake Audubon is the largest of Reston’s lakes by acreage and total watershed area. The lake and its surrounding woodlands support a typical variety of winter resident birds, along with an impressive assortment of waterfowl species.
Cancellation Policies for NVBA Bird Outings: Everyone’s safety and enjoyment are our top priorities. Occasionally, we may need to postpone or cancel an outing to protect the well-being of participants or guides. Whenever possible, we will notify you at least 48 hours in advance; however, last-minute changes may be necessary. Outings may be canceled or postponed for reasons such as:
- Unsafe air quality
- Guide illness
- Extreme weather, including: Lightning within 10 miles of the event location, temperatures above 90°, heavy thunderstorms, snow, or hail.
If an outing must be canceled on the day of the event, we will do our best to email all registered participants as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding and flexibility!
Pre-registration is not required for NVBA Bird Outings, but it helps us prepare and allows us to contact participants in case of last-minute cancellations (see cancellation policies above.) Otherwise, the walk will take place as scheduled.
Questions? Contact NVBA’s Community Engagement Coordinator, McKenzie, at [email protected].
