About this Event
Shooting game birds in flight, or simply shooting clay targets, is an exhilarating experience that requires practice. Maine is home to both waterfowl and upland bird hunting, with seasons that extend from early fall through early winter, giving hunters an opportunity to extend their outdoor hunting seasons beyond the traditional months. During the off-season, wing shooting for targets is an excellent way to connect with your local hunting and shooting community and improve your chances of success in the field.
In this workshop you will learn:
- Shotgun/Firearm safety
- Shotgun basics: Loading, unloading, handling different types of shotguns
- Impact of eye dominance and possible options to handle cross-eye dominance
- Proper gun fit and gun mount
- Assessing your target: Pick up, hold and break points
- Importance of focusing on your target
- Five-stand: Basic rules, safety and etiquette
At the end of the program, participants will be prepared to attend a five-stand (or similar) community shoot at a local range in their area.
Participants are expected to have some shotgun shooting experiences. Participants are encouraged to bring their own shotguns and may bring their own non-toxic ammunition if desired. 20- and 12-gauge non-toxic ammunition will be provided for those without. Non-toxic ammunition is required for all shooting at the SAM shotgun range.
This workshop will be a blend of hands-on demonstration and hands on practice, and led by Brian Nichols, with assistance from Carmen Bombeke, professional staff and experienced wing shooting hunters.
