Wine Class - Terroir Focus: Limestone

Terroir - this French word expresses the concept that a wine should express a sense of where it was grown. Perhaps the closest English translation is “placefulness.” It encompasses all the characteristics of vineyards - climate, soil, elevation, orientation - each of which can have a surprising impact on the final wine. In our Terroir Focus classes, we want to shine the spotlight on a specific aspect of terroir, and see how it expresses itself in wines from around the world.

In this class, Anita Bender will explore the effects of limestone soils on wines. Expect wines from classic limestone regions like Chablis and Champagne but also new world wines grown in similar soils. How do these sedimentary soils, composed of the remnants of ancient marine life, affect the wine grown in them?
