SOLD OUT BUT MORE DATES COMING SOON .....................Join us for this fascinating 90 minute guided walking tour to learn more about the history of the Didcot Newbury and Southampton Railway which passed under St. Giles Hill. Understand the reasoning for a second railway line through Winchester, about the infrastructure around the railway station at the bottom of the High Street and walk inside the brick arched tunnel which used to connect Chesil with Winnall, where the other end of the tunnel used to emerge.
Winchester's 'other' railway station was Chesil station which opened in 1885 and closed in 1964 due to lack of demand.
The tour explores the old station site, the route of the line, some of its remaining buildings including the Station Master's House (now a private dwelling so we are unable to go inside), the location of the Goods Yard and ends inside the disused Chesil Railway tunnel, one of the city’s hidden treasures and seldom open to the public.
This guided walk starts outside the Visitor Information Centre under the Guildhall and finishes just behind the Chesil Rectory (a 4 minute stroll from the starting point)
There are steep slopes and steps around St. Giles’ Hill which makes this tour unsuitable for wheelchairs - sorry. Please wear suitable footwear and come appropriately dressed for a walking tour.
