Winchelsea 13 mile walk

Schedule

Sun Aug 30 2026 at 09:30 am to 03:30 pm

UTC+01:00
Location

New Inn Winchelsea - Pub, Restaurant, Accommodation | Rye, EN

We hop over the county border into East Sussex, for this walk of around 13 miles starting from Winchelsea, on it you will enjoy magnificent views of the Brede & Tillingham Valleys. We have started group walks previously from Winchelsea, but this is the first one since June 2024. We do however utilise some of 1066 Country Walk, for those members who participated in the recent two day walk in July.
Commencing downhill from Winchelsea, it is then flat and easy along the Royal Military Canal and Pannel sewer, before the scenery then changes, when the route goes uphill to Icklesham. There are several ups and downs across the Brede valley and the Tillingham Valley, with one the last hill back to Winchelsea.
Our usual picnic lunch will take place at Udimore as well as possible drinks at the Kings Head, which we visited on our walk just recently on 31st May. There are other pubs along the route to choose from, but we will arrive too early at the Queens Head Icklesham, which we visited in October last year. As well as the above mentioned Kings Head, the route also passes the Plough at Cock Marling, where we stopped for drinks on the June 2024 walk. The New Inn, Winchelsea at the walk finish, we have frequented previously more than once is a useful port of call post walk.
Dogs welcome, but on a short lead when required.
