Some ghosts won’t stay buried—and some legends are all too real.
The New York Times bestselling Cork O’Connor Mystery series—praised as “a master class in suspense and atmospheric storytelling” (The Real Book Spy)—continues as Cork revisits a haunting case from his past while confronting new and deadly threats. Just before Halloween, Cork’s son Stephen, who works to free the wrongfully imprisoned, reveals that Cork may have wrongly convicted Ojibwe man Axel Boshey for murder decades ago. Determined to uncover the truth, Cork reopens the case, but Axel refuses to help—and powerful figures in Tamarack County will do anything to keep the past buried. As danger mounts, Cork’s young grandson offers a chilling explanation: the Windigo, a legendary cannibal spirit, has returned…and it won’t leave until it’s fed.
William Kent Krueger, raised in Oregon’s Cascade Mountains, attended Stanford University briefly before being expelled for political activism. He went on to work a variety of jobs—from logging and construction to journalism—before settling in Minnesota, where he researched child development and began writing. Based in St. Paul, Krueger is the award-winning author of the Cork O’Connor mystery series, set in northern Minnesota and featuring a former sheriff of Irish and Ojibwe heritage. His novels have earned numerous honors, including the Edgar, Anthony, Barry, and Minnesota Book Awards, and his last thirteen books have been New York Times bestsellers. His acclaimed stand-alone novels include Ordinary Grace (Edgar Award winner), This Tender Land, and The River We Remember, a 2023 bestseller and Edgar finalist.
