Learn about loons and discover what's threatening the survival of these iconic Northwoods birds at a pondside campfire talk!
About this Event

Discover wildlife that calls Wisconsin's Northwoods home through Wildlife Wednesdays at Treehaven! Join us monthly for this FREE all-ages program series, and explore the natural history of each month's focus animal through interactive activities, guided walks, and/or specimen observation. From fur to feathers, woods to water, predator to prey, and more, experience the diversity of the animal world right outside our windows—and learn how you can help protect it!
The eerie, enchanting wail of a common loon is perhaps the most famous sound of the Northwoods, and few could imagine a northern lake without it. However, if current loon population trends continue, quiet and loon-less lakes could become a reality for the Upper Great Lakes region. Through a campfire talk at Treehaven's Dragonfly Pond, explore the life history of these iconic birds and discover the numerous reasons behind their complicated decline. You'll learn small lifestyle changes you can make to support loons, as well as regional volunteer research opportunities you can help contribute to. Loons often return to Wisconsin as soon as lake ice melts between April and May, so if we're lucky (and weather allows), we might even have the chance to spot Dragonfly Pond's loons out and about!
Meet in the main parking lot. There is a brief (less than a quarter mile) walk to the pond across the parking lot and down a short trail. We will walk to the pond as a group; attendees with mobility concerns are welcome to follow behind in a vehicle and park in a smaller lot near the trail entrance for a reduced walking distance. Trail is overall wide and even, but accessing the pond requires descending a hillside. Talk will occur while seated under a shelter. All ages welcome, but children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Registration will remain open through the start of the event. Please reserve a spot for each attendee.
