About this Event
Blues City Kayaks' Wilderness First Aid (WFA) class through the Emergency Care and Safety Institute is a two-day (16 hour) course that teaches participants the skills and knowledge they need to provide first aid in remote settings where medical help may be hours or days away. The course covers a wide range of topics, including:
- Patient assessment: How to assess a patient's condition and identify life-threatening injuries or illnesses.
- Evacuation: How to decide when to evacuate a patient and how to safely transport them to help.
- Spinal cord injuries: How to assess and manage spinal cord injuries.
- Shock: How to recognize and treat shock.
- Head injuries: How to assess and manage head injuries.
- Wilderness wound management: How to clean and dress wounds in the wilderness.
- Athletic injuries: How to assess and manage common athletic injuries, such as sprains, strains, and fractures.
- Fracture management: How to splint and support broken bones.
- Dislocations: How to reduce and splint dislocated joints.
- Cold injuries: How to recognize and treat hypothermia and frostbite.
- Heat illness: How to recognize and treat heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
- Altitude illness: How to recognize and treat altitude sickness.
- Lightning injuries: How to recognize and treat lightning strikes.
- The medical patient: How to assess and manage common medical conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, and heart disease.
- Anaphylaxis: How to recognize and treat severe allergic reactions.
- Wilderness first aid kits: How to build and pack a wilderness first aid kit.
WFA classes are taught by experienced instructors who can provide hands-on training and realistic scenarios. Participants will learn how to use improvised materials to provide first aid in the wilderness, and they will develop the skills and confidence they need to help others in an emergency.
