This class is focused on the foundations of ethical & sustainable wild-harvesting, open to beginners or more experienced herbalists.
About this Event

Wildcrafting with Integrity is a class for herbalists of all skill levels - from the herbal curious to experienced practitioners, if you're interested in expanding your herbal practice by deepening your relationship with the land, this class is for you! This class is a lecture-style class, where we will dive into frameworks that help us cultivate an intentional, respectful relationship with our environment and our wild plants & fungi. If you're more interested in a wildcrafting class that is in the field, I recommend looking out for our seasonal community nature walks!

Ticket Info for Local Attendees: Unfortunately, there is over $8 in taxes and fees that will be added at checkout due to a new WA state law that requires sales tax to be collected on live events/classes/etc., this is in addition to Eventbrite processing fees. If you would like to just pay the actual ticket cost ($35), please register directly with Marika at Ballard Farmer's Market, or email directly at [email protected] to register; ticket must be paid in cash at market or upon arrival for the class.

Topics we will cover in this class include:

  • Ecological responsibility & stewardship, the role of humans in ecological management, political advocacy and conservation of public lands
  • Building relationship with the land: relationship as practice, deep listening, gratitude
  • Tools of the trade: working with apps, maps, resources, and practical skills for building our knowledge
  • Materia medica: plant profiles for regional late summer + fall medicinal plants & fungi of the Pacific Northwest
  • AND MUCH MORE

About Marika: "I am a bioregional herbalist. While the definition of that term means something different for everyone, to me it means that my practice as an herbalist is inseparable from the Pacific Northwest through familial generational ties, my relationships with farmers, and most importantly, my personal relationship to this land through farming, foraging, stewardship, and so much more.

I worked on farms here in Washington from 2013 to 2020, primarily vegetable and mushroom farms; I’ve even plowed crops with oxen like back in the old days! In 2018, I completed an interdisciplinary degree from the University of Washington in Environmental Studies & Sciences, focusing on Pacific Northwest ecology, sustainability, and more. I began my journey as a folk herbalist in the Central Cascade Foothills in 2014, and have since completed multiple programs and studied under teachers such as Sajah Popham, Michael Moore, and Matthew Wood.
