Wild on the Water: Wildlife Photography by Punt
About this Event
See Cambridge's wildlife from a completely different perspective.
Join us for an early morning two-hour wildlife photography excursion by punt, setting off from the Mill Pond and heading out along the River Cam towards Grantchester before turning back.
As we leave the city behind, we'll follow the quieter stretches of the river, looking for wildlife along the banks, in the reeds, trees and surrounding countryside.
With the river as our vantage point, you'll have the opportunity to photograph birds and other riverside wildlife from angles that simply aren't possible from the towpath.
🌅 Start Early. See More.
The early morning brings a completely different atmosphere to the Cam.
We'll make our way gently along the river, stopping at suitable points along the route to give you the best possible opportunities to observe and photograph wildlife before making our return journey towards Cambridge.
The changing morning light, calm water and quieter surroundings create the perfect conditions for photography.
📸 What You'll Explore
This practical wildlife photography workshop will help you make the most of photographing from the river, including:
- Finding photographic opportunities along the river
- Working with early morning light
- Choosing settings for moving wildlife
- Focusing and tracking unpredictable subjects
- Working with longer lenses from a moving platform
- Considering backgrounds, composition and perspective
- Capturing natural behaviour without disturbing the wildlife
Wildlife photography is all about patience, observation and being ready when the moment happens.
🚣♂️ Along the Grantchester Stretch
We'll meet at the Mill Pond before boarding our punt and heading out along the River Cam.
As Cambridge gives way to quieter countryside, we'll explore the river at a relaxed pace, looking for wildlife and taking advantage of the changing surroundings.
We'll travel along the Grantchester stretch before turning around and making our way back towards Cambridge, giving you around two hours on the water to photograph, experiment and enjoy the experience.
🦢 A Different Way to Photograph Wildlife
Forget the usual riverbank viewpoint.
This time, the river is your vantage point.
Whether you're an experienced wildlife photographer or simply looking to try something completely different, this is an opportunity to slow down, explore and photograph nature from the water.
