Memphis songwriter/recording artist Van Duren’s career has spanned the early 1970’s to present day, releasing 15 albums along the way. After a stint on bass with a band in 1975-76 that included post-Big Star friends Chris Bell and Jody Stephens, Van went on to record the solo albumsAre You Serious?(1978) andIdiot Optimism(1979), followed by the LP by Memphis pop band Good Question’sThin Disguise(1986). With each new release his song craft and performances became more legendary. He also collaborated on two albums with Tommy Hoehn (Hoehn Duren)Hailstone Holiday(1999) andBlue Orange(2002). Van’s brilliant album with LA singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Tim Horrigan was issued in 2012.
Mr. Duren’s more recent work with Memphis singer/songwriter Vicki Loveland (Loveland Duren) produced three albums, culminating in the 2021 LP release of their third album,Any Such Thing.
In 2016, decades of Van’s continuous pursuit of the muse caught the attention of two novice Australian filmmakers, resulting in the award-winning 2018 documentary,Waiting—The Van Duren Story(streaming worldwide since 2022).The soundtrack for the film was released by Omnivore Recordings in 2019, and the label also reissued Duren’s first two solo albums in 2020 to rave receptions from fans and press alike. Meanwhile, the road continues with recent archival releases of the live albumsCartwheeling Live: Van Duren & Good Question Live In Memphis 1992(Omnivore Recordings) andChemical Fire: Van Duren Live 1978(Airmail Recordings).
