This event is a collaboration between the Humboldt County Historical Society, the Humboldt County Library, and the Clarke Historical Museum.
Come join local science writer Barry Evans on a whirlwind illustrated history of Humboldt Bay--the only deep-water harbor between San Francisco and Coos Bay--from its original Wiyot inhabitants, who called it Wigi, to the present day. We’ll look at the discovery (and rediscovery!) of the bay, the effects of fishing and logging, including over 50 sawmills along the shoreline; the unprecedented return of Tuluwat Island to the native people; and contemporary challenges and opportunities, including rising sea levels and the potential of a major wind farm terminal; and more.
Barry Evans is a recovering civil engineer and 25-year Humboldt resident who has written extensively about our area in his Field Notes column in the North Coast Journal. His recent The New Humbook includes much information about the fascinating history of Wigi/Humboldt Bay, which you can read if you prefer to be outside on the afternoon of November 7th!
