In this lecture, Sithea San and Dr. Susan Needham will help answer questions they are most often asked, Why Long Beach? Why did Cambodians settle in Long Beach, California? and, How did the city become the largest community of Cambodians outside Southeast Asia? In this talk, our guest lecturers will present the history and development of the Cambodian community and discuss some of the many contributions Cambodians have made to their new home.

Lecturer Bios:

Mrs. Sithea San and her surviving family members immigrated to the US from Cambodia in 1981. She is currently the Coordinator of Community Health Education at Pacific Asian Counseling Services. Mrs. San has also held many leadership positions in the Long Beach Cambodian community. She was instrumental in obtaining the Cambodia Town Cultural District designation in Long Beach in 2007 and establishing the annual Cambodia Town New Year Parade and Culture Festival on Anaheim Street.

Dr. Susan Needham is a Professor of Anthropology at California State University Dominguez Hill and a co-founder of the Cambodian Community History and Archive Project at the Historical Society of Long Beach. She is co-author of the book, Cambodians in Long Beach, with Dr. Karen Quintiliani (Anthropology, California State University Long Beach).
