About this Event

Why Health Inequalities Persist Despite All the Efforts to Reduce Them: CCHSR In Conversation (In-person only)

Despite decades of research, policy initiatives and public health interventions, inequalities remain a part of health systems. Why is progress so slow and what might we be missing? Explore these questions and more at the next Cambridge Centre for Health Services Research (CCHSR) In Conversation event, taking place on Wednesday 3 June 2026, 6-8pm, at Murray Edwards College, Cambridge.

In this edition of the series, Professor Simon Griffin, Prof of General Practice at the University of Cambridge and Group Leader for the Prevention Group in the Primary Care Unit, will be joined by Professor Mike Kelly, Senior Visiting Fellow in Public Health at the University of Cambridge and former Director of the Centre for Public Health at the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), for an in‑depth discussion on 'Why health inequalities persist despite all the efforts to reduce them'.

Drawing on decades of experience in academia, the NHS, NICE and global health policy, Professor Kelly will reflect on what has - and hasn’t - worked in tackling inequalities, while Professor Griffin will guide the conversation and open it up for discussion with the audience.

This event is hosted by the Cambridge Centre for Health Services Research (CCHSR), a collaboration between the University of Cambridge and RAND Europe. We aim to inform health policy and practice by developing methods for measuring quality of care, and evaluating ways of improving the safety, effectiveness, efficiency and experience of care.

This eye-opening discussion on why health inequalities keep hanging around despite efforts to tackle them. We’ll dive into the real reasons behind the stats, share anecotes and explore what can actually make a difference. It’s a great chance to learn, question, and connect with others who care about making healthcare fairer for everyone. Don’t miss out on this important conversation!

The free annual In Conversation series brings together two subject matter experts, and a room full of academics, health practitiioners, patients and interested members of the public. Book your place!
