International assessments indicate a general decline in reading skill, motivation, and engagement among teenagers. Yet at the same time, the publishing market for young adult literature continues to flourish.
For example, adolescents use social media platforms, like TikTok to share titles, memorable quotes, and emotional reactions through the phenomenon known as BookTok, where some BookTok-profiles are followed by millions. So why do fictional stories hold such a powerful grip on young readers, despite the decrease in reading skill and engagement?
Drawing on insights from cognitive neuroscience, developmental psychology and empirical literature, Lilla Magyari, Associate Professor at the Department of Psychology , discuss how engagement with fictional stories may play a crucial role in adolescents’ social, emotional and cognitive development.
☕ Breakfast is served from 09.00 and the talk is held at 09.15.
The event is free of charge and open to anyone interested.
