Join us in celebrating the publication of Whole People in a Broken World: The Ethics of Mercy and the Pastoral Mission of the Church (Paulist Press, 2025) by Msgr. Jeremiah J. McCarthy, PhD, Professor of Moral Theology at Oblate School of Theology.

This landmark work explores moral theology through the lens of mercy and pastoral practice, reclaiming a deep strand of the Church’s tradition: moral action flowing from a character shaped in the image and likeness of Christ. McCarthy highlights the wisdom of Popes John Paul II and Francis, offering a theology that is both faithful to the tradition and attentive to the complexities of modern life.

Monsignor Jeremiah J. McCarthy, PhD, is a priest of the Diocese of Tucson and Professor of Moral Theology at Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio, Texas. Ordained in 1972, he has served the Church for more than five decades as a seminary professor, rector, accrediting director, and diocesan leader.

He earned degrees from St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo, California (BA, MA), the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley (STL), and a PhD in Theology from the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley (1985). He taught at St. John’s Seminary from 1983–2001, serving as Academic Dean, Vice-Rector, and Rector, before becoming Director of Accrediting and Institutional Evaluation for the Association of Theological Schools (2001–2009). He later served at St. Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park, the National Catholic Educational Association, and as Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia in Tucson (2014–2019).

Since 2019, Monsignor McCarthy has taught at OST, where he is known for uniting “a hard head and a soft heart” in the study of moral theology. His latest book, Whole People in a Broken World: The Ethics of Mercy and the Pastoral Mission of the Church (Paulist Press, 2025), offers a compelling vision of Catholic ethics rooted in mercy and compassion.
