The 12th and 13th centuries saw a dramatic increase and intensification of the churchβs treatment of supposed heretics. Dr. Sam Youngs (Dean of Humanities and Christian Studies at Bryan College) explores how the church could justify activity like the bodily torture of accused heretics, and what role their vision of Jesus played in this activity. The study forms a portion of a broader research program exploring how our theological constructs can scaffold traumatizing practices. If we understand this better in the past, we may be better positioned to faithfully avoid it in the future.
