The show features exquisite oil paintings by Melinda Borysevicz, deft and wry paintings by Mary Carol Kenney, vivid color portraiture by Tafy LaPlanche, hauntingly poetic mixed media encaustics by Tobia Makover, pointedly thoughtful oil painting by Darcy Melton, boldly oscillating analog collages by Nancey B. Price, stitched narrative on fabric by Bri’Anna J. Richards and dazzling pattern and color mixed media pieces by Julia Roland. The group and the work was curated by Darcy Melton, with the idea of the strength of women within an uninterrupted gaze.
This exhibition is about showing all facets of what it means to be a woman, from anger to joy, from contemplation to motivation, not as objects but as both the central figure and artist. “Who Gave You Permission?” declares the answer, “I did.”
Gallery profits from the show are donated to Mary’s Place which supports survivors of rape and sexual abuse with the resources they need to heal. Sexual violence is a tool used to subjugate, it’s a psychological and physical assault designed to take away someone’s power. Mary’s Place does the essential work of listening to and advocating for the survivors of sexual violence. Women’s rights are being stripped away, and with them our basic human right to safety. Yet when we are supported and heard by our community we are empowered to create and flourish.
