Which Way Do We Go? Maps & Orienteering Kids' Course

Ready to learn to explore the world around you, without getting lost?

This class will show kids how maps work, how to read a legend, and how to create their own maps through a fun exploration of the surrounding environment. Using games and a navigational scavenger hunt, kids can discover the parts of a compass and useful mapping techniques. Kids will gain a basic understanding of navigation and develop the ability to plan a route and orienteer without a compass.

Who: Kids ages 9 -12

When: Wednesday, July 24 OR Wednesday, July 31, from 9:00am - 12:00pm

Where: Meet at the Fall River Visitor Center, 3450 Fall River Road, Estes Park, CO. We will travel together into RMNP in Conservancy vehicles. Park entry fees and permits are included with your registration.

What to bring:

• Plenty of water and snacks.
• Sun protection: sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and protective clothing.
• A rain jacket and a warm layer, just in case.
• Sturdy footwear.
• A backpack to carry your gear. (You may leave extra gear on our vehicle during the class.)

This course is led by Betty Trummel. Betty has been a naturalist and outdoor educator for over 30 years. She fell in love with Rocky Mountain National Park at a family nature conference in 1983 and has been exploring Rocky ever since, hiking and backpacking in all areas of the park. Betty loves spending hours observing wildlife in its natural habitat, as well as sharing this special place with learners of all ages by "rambling" - taking time to explore and look at things up close and getting to know every corner of Rocky Mountain National Park.
