What does it mean to find a place in the world without losing yourself in the process?
This evening explores migration, belonging, identity and the challenges of integrating into a new country, with a particular focus on how women navigate cultural expectations, stereotypes and self-expression.
The evening begins with a screening of “Fragments of Belonging” by Croatian filmmaker Tatjana Božić, who is also the film’s main protagonist. In this deeply personal documentary, Božić reflects on her lifelong search for a place to call home. Having lived in Croatia, Bosnia, the Soviet Union, London and Amsterdam, she explores migration, identity and integration through her own experiences, as well as those of friends and family who have crossed borders.
The film raises questions that go beyond one person’s story: What does it mean to feel at home? How much of ourselves are we expected to give up to fit in? And what happens when we do not conform to the expectations of the communities around us?
The screening will be followed by a ciné-debate moderated by Martyna Adamska, with:
🎬 Tatjana Božić - filmmaker and protagonist of “Fragments of Belonging”
🎓 Marie Valentova - sociologist and research scientist at the University of Luxembourg, specialising in immigration, immigrant integration and social cohesion
Together, they will explore belonging as both a personal need and a social expectation, looking at migration and integration through a gender perspective. The discussion will touch on identity, cultural expectations, stereotypes and the pressure on women to adapt, fit in and be accepted while asking whether it is possible to belong without losing the freedom to remain true to oneself.
