When the Ground Shakes: A 14Y Selah Shabbat Experience

When the Ground Shakes is a two-day, recovery-informed Shabbat experience presented by 14Y Selah, bringing community, connection, and Jewish meaning into moments of uncertainty and change.

Presented by 14Y Selah in partnership with the Riverdale Y, Congregation Tehillah,Conservative Synagogue Adath Israel of Riverdale, Hebrew Institute of Riverdale-The Bayit, the Kehilah of Riverdale, Riverdale Temple, YCT Rabbinical School, YeshivatMaharat, with support from UJA-Federation of New York.

This weekend gathering invites participants into a shared experience of presence through a community dinner, learning, conversation, and time together in Shabbat. Rooted in an addiction recovery–informed approach and grounded in a Jewish lens, the program creates space for honesty, reflection, and belonging.

This experience is made possible through the support and collaboration of our Scholar in Residencei and the Riverdale Jewish community bringing together multiple organizations committed to connection, healing, and inclusive Jewish life.

The weekend unfolds across two days:

Friday - June 19th includes a full kosher meal, meaningful conversations, song circles, gratitude moments, and the opportunity to join Kabbalat Shabbat services at the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale (HIR) at sundown.

Saturday June 20 from 2pm-5pm continues with a 3-hour retreat focused on learning, connection, and shared process, offering tools and insights that bridge Jewish tradition and recovery. We will have snacks and refreshments for this experience. You will also recieve a welcoming gift from the 14Y Selah community.

Participants are welcome to join for the full weekend or attend individual portions.

This gathering is open to people in addiction recovery, those who love someone in recovery, and anyone seeking a meaningful, inclusive Jewish community experience.

No prior Jewish knowledge is required. Just come as you are.
