When Nora Ephron and Rob Reiner met to develop a movie idea, their discussion went in another direction and the seeds for When Harry Met Sally, were spawned. Sally’s character is based on Ephron with her restaurant orders and Harry is Reiner, who’s divorce from Penny Marhsall fed his pessimistic view of the world.
The 1989 movie traverses Harry and Sally’s drive from college in Chicago to New York, following them through twelve years of chance meetings in the city. Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan star as Harry and Sally. Bruno Kirby is Harry’s best friend Jess and Carrie Fisher is Sally’s best friend Marie.
