This intermediate-level course equips rehabilitation professionals with the skills and clinical decision-making strategies needed to assess, prescribe, and fit wheelchairs and mobility aids for adults with neurological conditions and related comorbidities. Jefferson Moss-Magee Rehabilitation’s team of expert Assistive Technology Professionals will lead this immersive two-day session.

Through a combination of lectures, labs, case studies, videos, and group discussions, participants will gain the confidence and knowledge to make individualized wheelchair prescriptions, ensuring optimal patient outcomes and improved participation in daily life.

What You'll Learn:

  • Evaluate functional capabilities and seating/positioning needs.
  • Consider diagnosis, prognosis, mobility goals, and environmental factors in equipment selection.
  • Navigate funding sources and payor requirements.
  • Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, caregivers, and community resources.
  • Integrate mobility-related assistive technology to maximize independence and quality of life.

Course Highlights

  • Interactive Lectures: Evidence-based approaches to evaluation and prescription.
  • Hands-On Labs: Trial, fit, and adjust a variety of wheelchairs, seating options, and accessories -- with instructor feedback.
  • Case Studies & Video Analysis: In-depth look at real patient case applications from JMMR hospital and clinics.
  • Group Discussions: Share strategies and solutions for common challenges.

Immersive Experience: You’ll interact firsthand with mobility equipment—recognizing both the enablers and barriers faced by wheelchair users—so you can better equip your patients for independence and quality of life.

Pre-Work: This course includes pre-requisite viewing of two lectures to help prepare you with wheelchair terminology and key processes. Links to these videos will be sent one week prior to the course:

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this course the participants will be able to

  1. Apply the functional abilities, mobility limitations, and environmental considerations of individuals with neurological impairments and accompanying comorbidities.
  2. Articulate the process of ordering a wheelchair and gain insight into the selection criteria, including factors such as mobility goals, postural support, pressure management, maneuverability, and transportation needs.
  3. Formulate three configuration adjustments to either a wheelchair or positioning strategies to address postural alignment, mobility performance, pressure relief, and comfort for individuals with complex mobility needs.
  4. Compare and contrast three types of wheelchairs and point out the distinguishing characteristics and indications for each.
  5. Create a personalized intervention plan and strategies to maximize functionality, promote independence, and optimize quality of life for adults with neurological diagnoses and comorbidities that limit quality of life.
  6. Select assistive technologies, such as power assist devices, tilt-in-space systems, electronic aides of daily living, and alternative drive controls, to enhance mobility and independence for individuals with neurological diagnoses.
  7. Examine the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to wheelchair prescription and mobility management, involving collaboration with healthcare professionals, caregivers, and community resources.
