“What’s Going On: Conduction, Improvisation and the Culture of Structure.”The Royal Room Collective Music Ensemble
November 10, 17, and 23.
The Royal Room Collective Music Ensemble was created in 2012 by composer Wayne Horvitz and has performed regularly on Monday nights at The Royal Room since that time. The ensemble spent a week in residency at The Stone in NYC in 2014. In 2015 “At the Reception” was released on the Songlines label to excellent reception and rave reviews.
RRCME looks, and sometimes sounds, like a traditional jazz orchestra with 6 brass, 5 reeds and rhythm section. The repertoire ranges from what might be described as jazz to the avant-garde, experimental and new music. “Conduction’, the improvised conducting technique first created by Lawrence “Butch” Morris, is utilized freely throughout.
This November, RRCME will perform on 3 Mondays as part of the “What’s Going On” festival.
All three evenings will be live recording sessions. November 10th will feature one set of tunes by Sun Ra’s Jazz In Silhouette. November 17th will feature guest artists saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock, and trombonist Naomi Siegel. November 24th features trumpet master Steph Richards.
What’s Going On: Conduction, Improvisation, and the Culture of Structure” is produced by The South Hudson Music Project with support from the Raynier Foundation, 4Culture, the Seattle Office of Arts and Culture, Earshot Jazz and Nonsequiter.
