What will it take to keep families in San Francisco?
About this Event
Raising a family in San Francisco has never been simple math. In one of the world's most expensive cities, even households earning well into the six figures say homeownership, a second child, or simply staying put can feel just out of reach—and many parents are quietly weighing whether they can stay at all.
Recently, the city has begun to respond in real ways, expanding subsidized child care in one of the most ambitious efforts of its kind to make family life here more livable. The question now is how far that progress can go.
Join us at Manny's for a live conversation that starts with the people living it: a panel of San Francisco parents on what they earn, what they spend, and the real trade-offs they're weighing between rent, child care, and putting down roots. Then Kunal Modi from the Mayor's Office takes the stage to discuss what the city is doing—and what comes next—to keep San Francisco a place where families can build a life and thrive. Moderated by Sophie Bearman, who has reported on the true cost of raising kids in this city.

Sophie Bearman is Senior Editor and Director of Audio, Video, and Social at The San Francisco Standard, where she also reports on the cost of raising children in one of the world's most expensive cities. A parent herself, Sophie joined the Standard in 2020 as its first editorial hire. Before that, she covered business news at TheStreet and CNBC, and earned an M.A. from Columbia Journalism School.
Kunal Modi is the Chief of Health and Human Services (HHS), appointed by Mayor Daniel Lurie. Before this, he spent nearly 12 years at McKinsey & Company, where he focused on helping governments and mission-driven organizations better serve the public.
