Behind the Lens: 12 Years Shooting for Sports Illustrated
What was it really like to photograph for Sports Illustrated during its heyday?
Join Patrick Murphy-Racey, Sony Photographer and veteran sports photojournalist, for a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at his 12 years shooting for Sports Illustrated. From 1992–2005, Patrick photographed some of the biggest moments in sports while working under the intense deadlines and expectations of one of the most iconic sports magazines in history.
Patrick will share how he landed his first Sports Illustrated assignment, how photographers received assignments, what it was like shooting in the days of film, and the incredible process of shipping rolls of film by airplane to New York to meet tight publication deadlines.
Through memorable images and firsthand stories, Patrick will reveal the pressure, excitement, challenges, and unpredictability that came with every assignment. You’ll hear about shoots that went perfectly and landed on the cover, as well as assignments that didn’t go according to plan—and what he learned from both.
Whether you're a sports photographer, aspiring photojournalist, or simply a fan of great photography, this seminar offers a rare look inside the golden era of Sports Illustrated from someone who experienced it firsthand.

Bio: Patrick Murphy-Racey – Sony Artisan of Imagery

Armed with his B.A., in Photojournalism from Marquette University, his twenty-five year career has only and always been about photography. Murphy-Racey has seen a great variety of assignments since his start in newspapers, through the peak years of being a magazine freelancer, his tenure as a regular contributor to Sports Illustrated, and into the corporate and industrial world of annual reports and advertising. While his assignments are varied and come from many different sources, photojournalism is his first love and constantly informs every assignment. Ever the chameleon, Murphy-Racey's career is a long series of re-inventions and rebirths, but the visual storytelling remains the same, even as the tools change. From 4x5 to 4K, he's technically inclined, and loves making great images. Patrick is more than competent covering just about any assignment, but his specialties include dramatic and creative use of strobe & LED lighting, sports action photography, environmental portraits, and powerful, well-lit HD interview video production. PM-R shoots both stills as well as motion and is always asking, What's next?
