About this Event

For her award-winning 2024 book , Ariana Mangual Figueroa spoke directly to Latina children about their immigration status and how it shaped their school experience. At this fraught moment for Latine immigrants, she will be joined by two co-researchers as well as academic and founder of The Women of Color Archive Wendy Barrales to discuss her research, what's happening now, and what comes next.

Copies of Knowing Silence will be available for purchase and there will be light refreshments and a reception in addition to the conversation and audience Q&A.

This event is part of Lofty Pigeon Books 'What Now? series, where we convene local experts to talk with our community about politics, society, and more in the aftermath of the 2024 election.

About Ariana Mangual Figueroa and Knowing Silence

Dr. Ariana Mangual Figueroa was born and raised in a Puerto Rican family in New York City. She began her career in education as a public school teacher and is currently an Associate Professor in the Ph.D. programs in Urban Education and Latin American, Iberian, and Latino Cultures at the CUNY Graduate Center. Dr. Mangual Figueroa's first book, Knowing Silence: How Children Talk About Immigration Status in School (2024, University of Minnesota Press) is a longitudinal ethnographic study that focuses on the lives of six Latina students from mixed-immigration-status families, from elementary school into middle school and beyond, to reveal the complex ways that young people understand and negotiate immigration status and its impact on their lives. Knowing Silence received the Council on Anthropology & Education's 2024 Outstanding Book Award and the 2024 American Educational Studies Association Critics’ Choice Book Award. Dr. Mangual Figueroa’s work has also been published in journals including Educational Researcher and the American Educational Research Journal, Anthropology & Education Quarterly and the Bilingual Research Journal.

About Wendy Barrales

Dr. Wendy Barrales is a Postdoctoral Associate at NYU and founder of the award winning arts-based storytelling project, The Women of Color Archive (WOCArchive). As a daughter of formerly undocumented Mexican immigrants, first-generation college student, and former NYC public school teacher, Dr. Barrales brings a unique perspective to her research, teaching, and art. Inspired by bell hooks, Gloria Anzaldúa, and her own mami and abuelita’s invisibilized stories in California and México, Dr. Barrales’ research interests include feminist pedagogies, participatory archiving, and digital art exhibitions as intergenerational sites of learning. She earned her Ph.D. in Urban Education from The Graduate Center - CUNY where she published a public multimodal dissertation, searching for mami & abuelita.
