What is SEL and Elements that Foster Social Emotional Learning? (07848)

Morning Session
In the morning session, participants will receive an overview of the Illinois Social Emotional Learning (SEL) standards, including performance level descriptors. A working definition of SEL will be provided, outlining what SEL is and is not. Participants will explore resources to familiarize themselves with the five core competencies required in the classroom and how to assess students’ progress. The session will conclude with participants preparing to integrate SEL concepts into their upcoming units.

Participants' Outcomes

• Understand and identify SEL standards in relation to student needs
• Analyze the effectiveness of SEL standards, sub-competencies, and descriptors
• Learn to explain the use of SEL, locate resources for integration, and apply strategies to facilitate SEL benchmarks

Afternoon Session
The afternoon session will focus on the 17 key elements necessary to support students in Social Emotional Learning. Participants will delve into several of these elements, based on findings from 30+ grade-band walkthroughs highlighting the most common opportunities for growth in the South Cook region. The session will cover best practices for classroom instruction, environment, discipline, and management. Participants will reflect on how they currently foster these elements in their schools and collaborate on enhancing practices to better integrate SEL into the curriculum.

Participants' Outcomes

• Self-assess current practices supporting SEL elements within classroom instruction and the learning environment
• Identify areas for improvement, affirm successful practices, and collaborate on new strategies to enhance SEL integration
