How should socialists approach questions of language and culture - especially when a language has been repressed.
Most people in Wales have heard of the Welsh Not. This was a wooden token lead lump inscribed with the letters "WN" that was used in some 19th-century Welsh elementary schools to discourage children from speaking Welsh.
More importantly, there was also the 1847 ‘Blue Books’ attacking not only Welsh language but religious beliefs and culture. In Wales, it is widely referred to as Brad y Llyfrau Gleision (The Treachery of the Blue Books).
Inspired by Saunders Lewis, who argued there had to be radical change in order to save the Welsh language, Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg began campaigning in the 1960’s.
Come to our meeting to discuss language, culture and Wales.

Sut dylai sosialwyr ymdrin â chwestiynau sy'n ymwneud ag iaith a diwylliant – yn enwedig pan fo iaith wedi cael ei gormesu?
Mae'r rhan fwyaf o bobl yng Nghymru wedi clywed am y 'Welsh Not'. Roedd hwn yn arwydd pren – neu weithiau'n ddarn o blwm – gyda'r llythrennau "WN" wedi'u hysgythru arno. Fe'i defnyddid mewn rhai ysgolion elfennol yng Nghymru yn y 19eg ganrif i atal plant rhag siarad Cymraeg.
Yn bwysicach fyth, cafwyd y 'Llyfrau Gleision' ym 1847, a oedd yn ymosod nid yn unig ar yr iaith Gymraeg, ond hefyd ar gredoau crefyddol a diwylliant. Yng Nghymru, cyfeirir at hyn yn aml fel 'Brad y Llyfrau Gleision'.
Wedi'i hysbrydoli gan Saunders Lewis – a ddadleuai fod angen newid radical er mwyn achub yr iaith Gymraeg – dechreuodd Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg ymgyrchu yn y 1960au.
Dewch i'n cyfarfod i drafod iaith, diwylliant a Chymru.
