This course is for Leaders working in Swansea Local Authority only.

Overview

This course explores the foundations of literacy that need to be in place before phonics can be taught effectively, with a focus on the role of leadership in securing this across the school. It considers developmental readiness and why introducing phonics too early can limit its impact.

Leaders will reflect on current provision and consider how to ensure early literacy practice is coherent, developmentally appropriate and aligned with the Curriculum for Wales.

Session Focus
  • Secure a clear understanding of the developmental foundations required before phonics, and why premature phonics teaching can limit impact at a whole-school level.
  • Develop a strategic approach to early literacy, ensuring provision supports effective phonics teaching across classes and phases.
  • Identify and implement key actions to strengthen early literacy provision, ensuring consistency, progression and alignment across the school.
