Farewell Diagnosis: Diffracting Psychoanalysis, Autism, and Assessment is an eclectic mix of neurodiversity, psychoanalysis, cultural critique, special interests, and clinical and personal experience. It honors the ways diagnosis can be a ground for a person to stand on while refusing diagnosis as the full story of a person. It neither claims to know what autism is, nor what an autistic person should do about it. Instead, it explores what autism has done and is doing. It remains curious about what diagnosis is doing, not only in terms of symptoms or strengths, but for anyone who might identify with it, wonder about it, or refuse it. It holds productive tension and raises existential questions about the nature of self, other, identity, knowledge, and world.
Join us for a conversation with Ben Morsa and Fernando Castrillon around the theme: what comes after diagnosis? They hope to think together, and with all those in attendance, beyond hacks, tools, and treatment plans and toward the messy texture of human experience in our time. For nearly fifteen years, Ben Morsa, a clinical psychologist, has worked at the intersection of psychoanalysis, psychological assessment, and the clinical care of neurodivergent, queer, and transgender patients. His writing grows directly out of that practice, driven by two persistent questions: what does assessment owe the person receiving it, and what comes after diagnosis?
Fernando Castrillon is a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst in private practice, the editor in chief of the European Journal of Psychoanalysis, a professor at the California Institute of Integral Studies, and a published author. He is a respected teacher and mentor for many and is currently working on a writing project focusing on psychoanalysis, the discourse of capitalism, and the California Dream.
