Aethenics — A Scientific Framework for Cognitive Synthesis

Aethenics is a proposed interdisciplinary framework for studying how information is transformed between physical, biological, cognitive and symbolic systems.

It examines the progression from matter → life → thought → mind, using concepts drawn from systems thinking, neuroscience, information theory, linguistics, computation and the study of complex systems.

Its foundational symbolic model is:

Here, the three states represent different functional positions within a cognitive system, while (=) represents their relationship and convergence rather than conventional mathematical equality.

Aethenics distinguishes between two complementary forms of representation:

Algorithm — the organisation and transformation of information.
Allegory — the symbolic interpretation and transmission of information.

The framework proposes that cognition operates between these two forms, continuously transforming sensory information, internal representations and abstract concepts before they are expressed through language.

The Oculus represents the cognitive interface through which these processes are observed. It provides a conceptual model for examining how perception, attention, memory, language and technology influence the construction of an individual's experienced reality.

Aethenics uses polymathic comparison to identify recurring structures across different domains of knowledge. These correspondences can then be treated as hypotheses for further investigation rather than assumed as proof of equivalence.

The objective is not to remove uncertainty from cognition, but to understand how ambiguity, prediction, error, interpretation and feedback contribute to the formation of meaning.

Aethenics proposes a framework for investigating the relationships between information, cognition and perceived reality — connecting empirical knowledge with the symbolic systems through which humans interpret it.
