Got a sewing machine but no idea where to start? Or perhaps it’s been sitting in a cupboard gathering dust…
This friendly, hands-on workshop will guide you step-by-step through how to set up, use, and troubleshoot your sewing machine. By the end of the day, you’ll feel confident sewing straight lines, using basic stitches, and understanding what all those dials actually do.
No experience needed—just curiosity and a willingness to have a go.
Complete beginners
Learners who feel intimidated by their machine
Those returning to sewing after a long break
Anyone who wants to “finally figure it out properly”
You will learn through a structured and supportive approach, including:
• Tutor demonstrations
• Step-by-step guided tasks
• Individual support and troubleshooting
• Group discussion and shared learning

During the session, you will:
• Set up a safe and comfortable workstation
• Identify key parts of a sewing machine and their functions
• Wind a bobbin and thread the machine correctly
• Sew basic stitches (straight, zigzag, reverse) with control
• Troubleshoot common issues (thread bunching, tension, skipped stitches)
• Produce a simple stitched sample sheet for reference
• Create a mini project

After this course, you may wish to:
• Progress onto a qualification such as the Level 1 Sewing, Garment Design and Construction course
• Join one of our themed workshops, such as Sewing for Wellbeing or further skills-based sessions
Please bring:
• A sewing machine (if you have one – machines can be provided if needed; please inform us in advance)
• Sewing machine instructions/manual
• A basic sewing kit: fabric scissors, pins, seam ripper, and tape measure
• A notebook and pen for notes and techniques
• Reading glasses (if required for close-up work)

What will be provided?
All materials will be supplied on the day using donated fabrics from our textile studio, supporting sustainable sewing through reuse and repurposing.
