“Were so lucky as to get the Cannon out of the River”In the winter of 1775–76, Henry Knox embarked on a daring expedition from Fort Ticonderoga to Cambridge, transporting 120,000 pounds of captured French-style cannons and mortars through harsh terrain and weather. Selecting 58 pieces for the Continental Army, including large 12-, 18-, and 24-pounders, Knox positioned the artillery on Dorchester Heights. This strategic move led to the British evacuation of Boston, marking a crucial early victory for the Revolution.
Historian Alexander Cain explores how Knox's journey transformed the Continental Army’s capabilities and exemplified the determination of the American cause.
