Location: Pioneer Park – Workshop. PLEASE NOTE parking is very limited near the workshop/playground area of the park. If you can, park at the Centennial Center and walk down.
This illustrated talk presents a week-long visit with the Kazakh golden eagle hunters of Western Mongolia who practice year-round traditional herding in their steppe country, far west of the Mongolian capital, Ulan Bataar, near the Kazakhian border.
Living amidst the open lowlands and rugged, bare mountains, the Muslim/Buddhist/animist people showed us their “gers” or yurts and how they cook and live in their current year-round residences. Animals—horses, sheep, goats, yak, and some Bactrian camels and dogs—are omnipresent in this pastoral existence. Traditional hunting from horseback using a trained golden eagle is unique to this area and we rode for several hours each day, hunting for fox. Later we attended a multiday eagle festival that featured many horseriding events, wrestling, archery, dancing and throat-singing.
We were privileged to experience this culture so different from our lifestyle and are delighted to share what we learned with our Folk School Community.
Continuing this lecture series, there will be a final talk about a mountainous, giant sand dune and paleontological area of the Gobi in the south with its large camels herds. Keep an eye on our calendar!
