Where the Walls Still Scream
The inmates may have been transferred in 1995, but the West Virginia Penitentiary is far from abandoned. Decades of overcrowding, violence, and despair have left a psychic imprint on the hand-quarried stone that no amount of time can erase. Known as one of the most haunted locations in North America, the "Moundsville Pen" isn't just a place where things go bump in the night—it’s a place where the darkness has a pulse.
The Shadow Man of North Walk
In the notorious North Walk, where the most violent offenders were housed, visitors frequently report a towering, solid-black mass. This "Shadow Man" is known to peer around corners and follow groups from a distance. Unlike a typical shadow, he is often described as "void-like"—a darkness so thick it blocks out the faint light of the corridor.
The Whispers of the "Sugar Shack"
Located in the basement, the Sugar Shack was the inmates' windowless recreation room—a place of illegal trades, gambling, and brutal "prison justice." Today, investigators capture some of the most chilling EVPs (Electronic Voice Phenomena) here. Visitors report the sound of gravelly voices whispering warnings directly into their ears and the unmistakable clinking of phantom chains on the concrete floor.
The Executioner’s Current
In the room that once housed "Old Sparky," the prison's custom-built electric chair, the air remains thick and static-charged. Many who enter the execution chamber report sudden, overwhelming bouts of nausea, dizziness, and the smell of ozone or burning hair—sensations that vanish the moment they step back into the hallway.

The depths of the prison hold even more restless energy:
The Circular: The heavy iron rotating gate that served as the main entrance to the cell blocks. It has been known to groan and move on its own, as if still processing a line of new arrivals.

The 1986 Riot: A New Year’s Day uprising that saw inmates take control of the facility, resulting in three deaths and a permanent scar on the prison’s legacy.
The question isn’t whether the Penitentiary is haunted. The question is: Can you handle what’s waiting for you in the North Hall?
