About this Event

This book club meetup is all about good conversation and community. Whether you’ve read every page or just started the book, bring your thoughts, questions, and vibes.

This month, the West Oakland Book Club dives into When No One is Watching by Alyssa Cole, a chilling and suspenseful thriller that reimagines gentrification as a sinister conspiracy. Set in a rapidly changing Brooklyn neighborhood, the story follows Sydney Green, a lifelong resident watching her community disappear, and Theo, her new neighbor, as they team up to uncover the unsettling truth behind the vanishing locals.

As they dig deeper, what begins as a history project spirals into a heart-pounding fight for survival, where paranoia blurs into reality and every empty brownstone hides a secret. Cole’s prose is sharp and urgent, weaving social commentary with psychological suspense to expose the violence hidden beneath “urban renewal.” Both timely and terrifying, When No One is Watching asks what happens when your home becomes the battleground for erasure—and whether uncovering the truth will set you free or get you silenced.
