West End Strings Bio
Brian is a lifelong fiddler and violinist, having started at the age of five. He holds a music degree from Michigan State University and currently teaches strings and chorus at Gateway Elementary School in Travelers Rest, South Carolina. Since relocating to Greenville over a decade ago, Brian has been a highly active presence in the Carolinas’ Old-Time, Bluegrass, and Americana scenes. In addition to his exceptional fiddle work, he is an engaging vocalist and songwriter whose musicianship brings both fire and finesse to the duo’s sound.
Charlie is a self-taught guitarist and singer from Shingle Hollow, North Carolina. Raised on a 100-acre family farm, his musical roots run deep in Bluegrass tradition. He began performing in a family band at age 15 before moving to Greenville around 1990. Charlie’s influences span a wide musical landscape—from Flatt & Scruggs and New Grass Revival to the Grateful Dead, Darrell Scott, Acoustic Syndicate, and Widespread Panic—giving West End Strings a broad and eclectic repertoire.
Having played together in the West End String Band for nearly ten years, Brian and Charlie share an easy musical chemistry that feels effortless and exciting on stage. Their interplay, harmonies, and instrumental conversations create an engaging live experience that blends tradition with exploration.
