WELLINGTON POETS, IT’S TIME TO SLAM! 🎤
The 2026 New Zealand Poetry Slam Championships are kicking off in Wellington, and we’re looking for poets to take the mic!
Never slammed before? This is for you too.
There will be 4 heats in Wellington, each giving a new group of poets the chance to perform, meet other writers and experience the beautiful chaos of poetry with a scoreboard.
🏆 HOW IT WORKS
The top 3 poets from each heat will advance to the Wellington Regional Final, bringing together 12 poets from across the four heats. From there, 2 poets will represent Wellington at the 2026 New Zealand National Poetry Slam Championships!
🎤 THE BASICS
• Perform your own original poetry
• 3 minutes max + 10 sec grace
• 5 random audience judges
• Read from your phone, paper or memory
• No props, costumes or backing music
• Bring 3 poems + 1 tie-breaker

A slam is nothing without a room full of people listening, reacting, laughing, yelling and occasionally getting handed a scorecard and far too much power.
Whether you’re taking the mic, supporting a friend or simply love poetry, come be part of it.
