A consideration of investment in the defence industry - can the UK afford to cut spending in today's volatile times? Can it afford not to?
About this Event

Hosted by and Weston North Somerset Trades Union Council and Weston-super-Mare's Morning Star Supporters Group. Our keynote speaker is Hugh Kirkbride who is a member of the Alternative Defence Review Working Group and Unite activist (speaking in a personal capacity). Hugh will help us discuss:

  • last year's Alternative Defence Review which was commissioned by RMT and CND,
  • the TUC's recent decision to call for prioritising of welfare and fair pay, above weapons and war,
  • whether increased investment in welfare and wages could benefit the southwest region.

Participants should gain a balanced understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of spending on the defence industry and an opportunity to connect and exchange perspectives in a welcoming atmosphere.

The event is open to people who are interested in, or work in, the defence industry, trade union members, those thinking about joining a union, students, advocates for peace, and anyone interested in news and current events.

There will be information about trade unions, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament/Bristol CND, copies of the Morning Star newspaper and a bucket collection for the Morning Star.
