Balpals!Welcome to Glasgow Balboa's Autumn/Winter series of Balboa Classes!
This time, we're dividing up classes into two six week blocks: the Autumn series will begin on 2nd September and end on 7th October with a couple of slow balboa classes from a visiting teacher; we'll then have a break of two weeks and the Winter series will start on 28th October and finish with a Festive party on 9th December.
In the Autumn series Beginners course, we'll be working on building your vocabulary with classic moves based on the up-hold basic such as scoots and paddles, lollies and throwouts. We'll also be working on leading and following skills. So, if you're new to Balboa, or perhaps a more advanced dancer who wants to learn the other role, join us every Tuesday at 7pm.
After a short social/practice time, the Improver class will start at 8.10pm. In this class we'll be working on variations to the basic moves as above, some more advanced combinations and sequences, plus all the fun stuff we've been learning this year at workshops around the UK and internationally.
Class info:
Beginners' Class: 7-7.50pm
Social/Practice Time: 7.50-8.10pm
Improvers' Class: 8.10-9pm
Price: £6 for one class & social; £8 for both classes and social.
Or, if you want a bargain, on the first week only, buy a full 6 week pass for just £30, saving yourselves £6!
For those who've bought a pass and are taking both classes, just pay an extra £2 weekly.
What to expect:
* Balboa is danced in close hold, where you'll be in close contact with your partner, so we encourage you keep yourself fresh by wearing a clean top, deodorant and using chewing gum or mints!
* Footwear with a slippy sole is preferable, as this will allow you to "swivel" your feet which is important for some moves, and is easier on the knees. Followers traditionally wore shoes with a small heel, however this is down to personal preference.
* We will be rotating partners throughout the lesson as we feel that's the best way to learn. This will enable you to dance with people of different experience levels and as a result, learn faster!
The History bit:
Like other swing dances, Balboa originated on dancefloors in the USA from the late 1920s onwards. It got its name due to its origins on the Balboa peninsula, close to Los Angeles.
If you're new to Balboa and not sure what it is, why not join our Glasgow Balboa Facebook group, where we often post inspiring balboa videos for everyone to enjoy!
Any questions? Message us, post here or in the group, or talk to us on a Tuesday night!
