Côte Rôtie is the northernmost appellation of the Northern Rhône. At its core are two dramatically steep slopes—Côte Brune and Côte Blonde—which together form the heart of the region.A trilogy of legendary single-vineyard wines, known collectively as the “La La’s,” comes from these hillsides: La Landonne, La Mouline, and La Turque. These vineyards are among the most coveted in the world.
- Côte Brune lies to the north, planted on darker, iron-rich soils that produce more powerful, structured wines.
- Côte Blonde is farther south, planted on sandy limestone soils that give wines greater finesse and aromatic lift.
2021 Domaine Jamet Côte Rôtie $169.94
Domaine Jamet was founded by Joseph Jamet in 1950 and has since become one of the benchmark producers of Côte Rôtie. The estate is now run by Joseph’s son, Jean-Luc, with his son Loïc recently joining as the third generation.Jamet’s philosophy emphasizes blending across vineyards rather than producing single-site expressions. Their Côte Rôtie is made from 100% Syrah sourced from 20 parcels across 15 different vineyards, capturing a well-rounded expression of the appellation. The wine is fermented with whole clusters and aged for 22 months in barrel, of which 15% is new oak.
2022 René Rostaing Côte Rôtie “La Landonne” $189.94
René Rostaing began making wine part-time in 1971, eventually founding the Domaine in the early 1990s after inheriting prime vineyards from his father-in-law, Albert Dervieux, and his uncle, the legendary Marius Gentaz. With this inheritance—and mentorship from Gentaz—Rostaing quickly rose to the top ranks of the Northern Rhône.His son, Pierre Rostaing, has run the estate since 2015.La Landonne lies entirely on Côte Brune, making it the most powerful and structured of the “La La” wines. This bottling comes from a 1.6-hectare plot planted on iron-oxide-rich schist. It is 100% Syrah, fermented with whole clusters and aged in a mix of barrels with minimal new oak, preserving the vineyard’s muscular character.
2020 Guigal Côte Rôtie “La Mouline” $359
E. Guigal was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal. His son Marcel joined the winery at age 18 after Etienne suddenly lost his sight, and together they built one of the Rhône’s most influential estates. Today, Marcel and his son Philippe run the Domaine side by side. Based in Ampuis, Guigal is the region’s largest and most recognized producer.Guigal pioneered the concept of single-vineyard bottlings of Côte Rôtie, and they own all three of the “La La” vineyards.La Mouline was the first La La produced (in 1966). It lies on Côte Blonde, whose lighter soils contribute elegance and aromatic lift. The wine is composed of 89% Syrah and 11% Viognier, co-fermented from 70-year-old vines, and aged for an extraordinary 40 months in 100% new French oak.Only a small number of bottles are produced each year.
2020 Guigal Côte Rôtie “La Turque” $369
La Turque was the third of Guigal’s La La bottlings, first released in 1985. The vineyard is extremely steep and situated primarily on Côte Brune, just north of Côte Blonde—leading Guigal to describe it as “Côte Brune terroir with accents of Côte Blonde.”Stylistically, La Turque bridges the power of La Landonne and the finesse of La Mouline. The wine is 93% Syrah and 7% Viognier, co-fermented and aged for 40 months in exclusively new French oak.
