Upcoming Town Hall Meetings – Jail Study & Public Input**Please share and try to attend one of these outreach meetings**
The Gage County Board of Supervisors will be hosting two upcoming Town Hall meetings to provide information and gather public input regarding a potential jail project.
� Wednesday, March 4
AND
� Friday, March 6
� 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
� Auditorium at Beatrice High School (Hevelone Center)
We will:
* Review the current condition of the jail
* Show video footage of existing conditions
* Present the jail study and projected bed needs
* Explain the difference between a “build” concept and a “no-build” concept
* Discuss long-term considerations and potential impacts
One major component of this discussion is projected bed count. Depending on which data model is used — a 20-year projection, a 30-year projection, including or excluding the COVID population dip — the projected need ranges from 70 to 110 beds. That difference significantly impacts cost and design.
Before conducting a full cost analysis or determining feasibility, the Board needs direction from the public. We need to understand:
* How many beds the community believes are appropriate
* Whether a greenfield site should be considered
* Whether maintaining, renovating, or housing inmates elsewhere should be prioritized
There are many factors involved beyond construction costs. These include employee retention, transport time and liability if inmates must be housed elsewhere, staffing impacts, and broader economic effects if county jobs move out of the community.
Once the presentation is complete, attendees will be asked to fill out a survey to help provide direction to the Board. The feedback gathered from these surveys will guide the next steps before any final numbers or feasibility decisions are made.
