Who This Class Is For

This session is ideal for:

  • Students who have completed Session 1 (Introduction) and Session 2 (Warping & Loom Dressing)
  • OR experienced beginners who already understand loom dressing, fibre types, and basic weaving terminology

In this class, the loom is already dressed and ready for weaving.


What You Will Learn
Pattern Theory & Shaft Logic
  • How weaving patterns are written
  • How to interpret drafts, threading charts, and treadling sequences
  • The role of shafts in creating structure
  • How lift plans translate into woven cloth
  • How pattern variations emerge from different shaft combinations

Hands‑On Weaving
  • Loading and winding shuttle bobbins
  • Managing tension and rhythm
  • Beginning your first woven sample
  • Understanding beat, selvedges, and shuttle control
  • Building confidence with multi‑shaft weaving techniques

You will weave your own sample, guided closely throughout.


Materials & Tools

All tools are provided, including:

  • Boat shuttles
  • Bobbins
  • Bobbin winder
  • Ashford 8‑shaft table loom
  • Natural fibres (wool, cotton, silk, bamboo, linen)



Outcome

By the end of this session, you will:

  • Understand how weaving patterns are structured
  • Be able to read and interpret multi‑shaft drafts
  • Load and manage shuttle bobbins confidently
  • Begin weaving your first structured pattern
  • Be ready for Session 4, where you will refine technique and explore more complex designs



Prerequisites

To ensure a smooth learning experience, students must either:

  • Have completed Sessions 1 & 2,
    OR
  • Be comfortable dressing a loom and reading basic weaving terminology.
