A hands‑on, eco‑friendly introduction to weaving. Learn about natural fibres, essential weaving tools, and to use a square warping frame.
About this Event

This first session in the 4‑part weaving course is designed for absolute beginners. You’ll be introduced to the foundations of weaving using an Ashford 8‑shaft table loom, a highly versatile loom capable of producing everything from airy pashminas to structured table linens, towels, and durable rugs. Matrilineal Heirlooms' atelier is the only known venue in London offering hands‑on weaving instruction on an Ashford 8‑shaft table loom. No other weaving studios or textile schools in the city currently advertise table‑loom classes, making this course uniquely suited for beginners seeking authentic multi‑shaft weaving training.

You will learn:

1. Natural eco‑friendly fibres

We only work with sustainable, natural materials. You’ll explore the qualities, textures, and uses of:

  • Wool
  • Bamboo
  • Cotton
  • Silk
(Our atelier does not use synthetics, polyester, acrylic, or plastic‑based fibres.)

2. Loom anatomy & essential weaving tools

A guided introduction to the loom and the tools you’ll use throughout the course:

  • Warp beams
  • Shafts & heddles
  • Shafts
  • Threading Hooks
  • Shuttle
  • Reed
  • Cloth beam
  • Temper
  • Raddle
  • Bobbin‑wrapping tools
  • Tassel‑making tool
  • Various weaving sticks
You’ll learn what each tool does, how to handle it, and how it fits into the weaving workflow.

3. Warping on a square warping frame with pegs

You’ll practice creating your first warp using a square warping tool. This includes:

  • Measuring your warp
  • Planning thread order
  • Securing tension
  • Preparing the warp for transfer to the loom

Class sizes are intentionally kept very small to ensure each student receives focused guidance, meaningful exposure to the loom, and extensive hands‑on practice.
