Weary Blues: Poems of the Harlem RenaissanceThree singers, three styles, one common heritage.
Welcome to an intimate concert where African-American poetry meets jazz, blues and classical tones.
Trina Coleman has set lyrics by Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes (one of the first to paint the African-American experience in words). Drawing inspiration from the rhythms of jazz, the melancholy of the blues, and the beauty of classical music, the poets' rich musical background and flourishing period are reflected. A performance with ethnic identity as the context.
Composer Trina Coleman is originally from the USA, but has lived in Norway since 2016, and has decades of experience as a professional vocalist in various genres. Camilla Tømta lives in Hamar and is the lead vocalist of the locally renowned Low-Fly Quintet with many years of experience in gospel and jazz, and will perform as a blues singer in this piece. Siv Misund, who lives in Oslo, is a well-established opera singer with an additional background in gospel and improvisational traditions. The talented Ole Gjøstøl will join on piano.
The project is organized with support from Hamar Municipality, Norwegian Jazz Forum, and Innlandet County Municipality.
